While links between art and education have long existed, it has become evident in the past twenty years that practitioners of each have become mutually concerned with integrating the two fields. The purpose of this survey is to explore the trend as seen from the perspective of different art world professionals. Today the questions are answered by London-based visual arts writer, project manager and producer Anne Field. In addition to working on a number of successful publications with TransGlobe Publishing and Thames & Hudson, Anne is a lecturer and seminar leader for the Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
From your professional standpoint, what association do you see between art and education?
I think education is an important part of art (it often allows one to appreciate artwork on different levels) and that art should be an important part of education systems but they are not entirely reliant on one another.
Should art aim to educate?
Yes sometimes. It should expand thinking (hopefully for both the artist and the viewer) which can be educational.
Should the artist aim to educate?
No. Gallerists, Art Advisors, Publishers and Museum should aim to educate and not all for the same audiences.
Which artists do you credit with your education?
Any of the artists that were included in my Art History 101 and 102 survey classes in undergrad :)
Is there a place for educational/pedagogical art in the art market?
I think there is a place for all types of artwork in the art world but I would not be able to say whether there is a place for this type of artwork on the art market. I would think that educational/pedagogical art is not prone to making much money on the art market as it would require more interaction, time and space, which is not conducive to a quick auction sale.
