The following is a list of six galleries in London’s East end. Together, they make for one long day, but seen in the order suggested and split into a weekend, they are very manageable. Although there are a couple of buses involved, the East end is a dynamic place to explore especially in the name of contemporary art.
At Parasol Unit in London’s East End, Katy Moran’s paintings and mixed media collages will be exhibited until the 8th of March. Each work, small as they may be for fairly abstract paintings and given ample wall-space, contain the dramatic gravity of a tableau or vast landscape, hinted by her clever titles. On the main floor, several of her paintings such as Captain Beaky and his Band (I and II, 2006) contain Claudian landscapes with an atmospheric distance of golden or green glowing light and complemented with dynamic, quasi figurative swatches in the ‘foreground’. On the upper floor, her paintings are brighter with collaged pieces of old cartoons, cloth, diagrams and maps, assembling into jumbled scenes of chaotic parade. Not only are Moran’s works intriguing for her exquisite use of colour and composition, but also for the narratives she provokes from the viewer.
